Since 2007, we have worked to preserve the rich natural and cultural history found within Legends Park.

Wilcox Watershed Conservancy (WWC) is a non-profit organization established in 2007 as a result o a public-private partnership with the City of Petersburg and people from across Virginia to establish Legends Park and Nature Conservancy as a premier natural park for education and passive recreation for the benefit of community and region. With a commitment to establish a secure future for the park, the Petersburg City Council in 2004 adopted a master plan for the preservation of the site along with public improvements and educational and interpretive programs.

Within its boundaries, Petersburg's Legends Park contains a variety of geological, historical, botanical, and recreational sites which make it unique.

The park is a natural classroom to encourage exploration of local flora and fauna, discover the area’ s rich, cultural history, and uncover ancient fossils . And there are still many clues and mysteries within the park that have yet to be unearthed. Nowhere else can you find walkways, trails, and fields surrounded by a 330 million year old granite formation, a 4.5 million year old marine deposit filled with fossils, a series of Confederate Civil War earthworks, a wildflower and bird sanctuary, a landscape created by women carrying out a Depression Era WPA project, and a man-made lake, Willcox Lake, that prompted one of the country’s early Civil Rights cases.

It is this extraordinary historical heritage and the rare natural habitat found in Petersburg Legends Historical Park and Nature Sanctuary that the Willcox Watershed Conservancy seeks to preserve.
